Prior to 1974:
In existence at that time was an umbrella organization, the Upper Midwest
Miniature Aviation Association (UMMAA) Headed by Larry Sroufe and Max Hansen of
Huron, SD. This was a loose confederation of clubs without a fixed Constitution.
By 1975 philosophical differences as to the type of control This organization
was to effect upon the various clubs produced more and more lack of support. And
after 1976 when Marlin Winsel of the Brooking Aeromates was president, the UMMA
Jan 16, 1974:
First organizational meeting of Brookings Aeromates, where the club was
defined as : A Confraternity of Model Aviation Enthusiasts. There was a $5.00
initiation fee. No other dues where charged. Future project financing was to be
done through member assessments as needed.
Mar 25, 1974:
Flying site north of the University (SDSU) athletic field formally
Apr 8, 1974:
Received required FCC Radio Station License, cost $20.00
Apr 21, 1974:
Participated in the first Mall Show as a club, Donavan’s in Sioux Falls.
Jun 16, 1974:
Hosted the club’s first Fun Fly. Member’s wives provided covered dish dinner
for all participants to date we have hosted 30 Fun Fly’s.
Mar 4, 1977:
An extended search for a new flying site was begun, as the university site
became less and less appropriate.
Dec 7, 1992:
Brookings Aeromates began restructuring as a club leading to the present
revised constitution adopted on February 1996.
Jan 1, 1993:
Lease with the City of Brookings for our current Flying field (6 Acres of the
Northeast quadrant of the Brookings Landfill) was signed.
Twenty five members strong now, with many improvements on the current flying
site, including a lean-to, storage shed, park benches and tables, two runways
and lots of parking space.
